Open rates live and die on the subject line. You can write the best email of your life and it won’t matter if the subject line doesn’t earn the click first.

What actually works

Specificity beats cleverness. “3 changes that cut our client’s bounce rate in half” outperforms “You won’t believe this marketing secret” almost every time. People open emails that sound like they’re about something real.

Curiosity gaps, used honestly. A subject line that raises a real question the email answers works well — but only if the email actually delivers. Breaking that trust once tanks your open rates on everything that follows.

Short wins on mobile. Most email gets opened on a phone first. Subject lines over about 50 characters get cut off in most inboxes, so front-load the important part.

What reliably underperforms

ALL CAPS, excessive punctuation, and words like “free,” “guarantee,” or “act now” both read as spammy to humans and can trip spam filters before a human ever sees it. “Newsletter #14” style subject lines also quietly kill open rates over time — nobody’s excited to open an email that announces itself as routine.

A simple test to run

Write 3 subject line options for your next send. Read them out loud. The one that sounds like something a real person would actually want to open — not a marketing department — is usually the right one.
